Hebrews 10:11-14 {Lesson 10/Day 4}

“But wait! There’s more!” the late-night infomercial salesman shouts...How many times have you seen a flashy infomercial for a new product claiming that it’s so good that you’ll “never need to buy another one!” It’s such an exciting idea that people clamor to buy it and try it, but of course, with a rare exception, it never really quite works. Someday, somehow, that new thing is going to wear out, break apart, get dull, or lose its usefulness. The exact opposite is true in a spiritual sense for those who hold fast to Christ. What Christ has accomplished for us is a once and for all sure thing. We are not only cleansed from our sin, we are constantly being made holy – stain free. Nothing sticks except the righteousness of Jesus Christ. What we need to really grasp from this passage is that those who are friends of God are so because Christ mediated a better relationship so we could come near to Him. But wait, there’s more! We are not just sanctified as a once and done act, we’re constantly being sanctified because Jesus is always interceding for us. The next time you’re down and questioning your position in Christ, remember that no good works on your part made you holy, so no bad works can remove it. You are secure in Christ because of what he has done. You can set it and forget it!

Hebrews 10:5-10 {Lesson 10/Day 3}

There’s no way to grasp how significant it is that we are made holy before God if we don’t grasp how desperately needy we are. We cannot truly love and be thankful to God if we don’t see our sin. This is what separated Saul from David. Saul wanted the external things to look good to others. David, who also did terrible things, truly wanted a clean heart before God. David was saved from his sin – Saul, perished in his. Today, you can be assured of your position of holiness before God not because of anything you have ever done or could ever do but because of the sacrifice of Jesus on your behalf. He has made you holy. That is a once and for all act. You cannot lose your salvation. You are assured of your position in Christ for eternity because of His perfect sacrifice for you.

Hebrews 10:1-4 {Lesson 10/Day 2}

Think of how different things are for us who are in Christ! Because of Jesus we live in freedom! There is no condemnation to those who are in Christ. It's freeing and joyful to know that our sins are forgiven. Robert Govett said, "He who is obliged to take a medicine to stay alive cannot be said to be cured." Isn’t that exactly how it was was under the Old Covenant? No removal of sin...instead they needed to keep taking the same medicine because they had only a reminder that they weren't cured. Jesus came and cured the sin problem. He has made it so that we are finally, fully, and fabulously free – “Finished.” That was the word Christ said and that is exactly what has happened – no need for ongoing reminders of our sin – It. Is. Finished. Thanks be to God!

If you have a dog, then you probably know the feeling of being greeted by a wiggly, jumpy, excited pup who's been eagerly awaiting your return. I sure do! Whether I’ve been gone for a day or half an hour, my Lucy is a blur of joy and relief when I get home. I think of this when I consider how glorious it will be to be face-to-face with the One who has for all this time been face-to-face with God for me. Jesus is face-to-face with God on my behalf right now. This is more personal than simply being in the presence of God, isn’t it? And one day, I will see Him and know Him even as I have been fully seen and known. What a great day that will be, one for which, if I had a tail, I would wag it in joy and eager anticipation! Maybe God gave us dogs to help us visualize that joy?

Hebrews 9:23-26 {Lesson 9/Day 7}

Today we honor the life of Billy Graham. He served Christ faithfully and is now Home and whole hearing from his Father, "Well done, good and faithful servant." His life touched yours in ways you probably don't even know. He led over 400 crusades across the world reaching literally millions of people. I was one of them. In 1985 I attended his 1985 Anaheim Crusade, and while I had already given my life to the Lord, it was at that Crusade that I felt the amazing power of the Holy Spirit and the affirming call on my heart to serve Christ with all my heart no matter what. You’ve heard it said, “The only sure things in life are death and taxes.” While that may be true for many, even if some try to find wiggle-room on the taxes part, there’s certainly no wiggling by our own will out of death. Nevertheless, this little statement is incomplete for those who follow Jesus Christ. Christians can add one powerful truth to this phrase: “sin has been put away.” Don’t miss that significant truth in today’s brief study. By the once and for all sacrifice of Jesus our sins have been put away, removed, done away with – treating it as if they no longer existed. Whose sins are treated like this? The Believers. For those who name Jesus as their Savior and their Lord. The one thing that could separate us forever from God has been nullified because of Christ – our better mediator has done exactly that - mediated a better covenant. We have a better deal. While death, taxes, and sin remain a sure thing for all humans – sin and its result (no not taxes!) death are done away with under the cleansing flow of the blood of Jesus. Our sins are cleansed, “if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” That’s a sure thing. The best sure thing. The only sure thing that ultimately matters. Billy Graham knew this and lived this truth as a testimony for us as well. God bless him.

Hebrews 9:15-22 {Lesson 9/Day 6}
Tuesday Feb 20, 2018

Muslims don’t believe that Jesus died on the cross. They believe that He only appeared to die and that He was rescued from death. They don’t understand why Christians think that Jesus had to die. The author of Hebrews explained why Jesus did: “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” This is something no
Muslim without the prompting of the Holy Spirit can grasp. We needed the death of Jesus. It wasn’t a tragic death. It wasn’t a senseless death. It was a heroic death. It was a reasoned death. The death of Christ fulfilled every covenant made between God and man since the first sin broke our relationship. The blood of Jesus poured out for us, reset everything. It made the Old Covenant obsolete and began the New. When you take communion next
time, hold that cup representing the blood of Jesus more preciously than ever before and thank Him for purifying you through His blood.

What does your heart long for? Are you finding it in a way that will ultimately satisfy or eventually leave you needing and wanting more? In our study we're seeing that the Old Covenant and those practices - even though they may seem outwardly impressive and even meet a need for ritual and order - are empty in comparison to the reality of a saving relationship with Jesus Christ because He is a better priest. He has offered a better sacrifice, and He has shown the only way into true and eternal sanctification – the blood of Jesus. “Are you going to turn your back on that and go back to the crumbs of the foreshadowing which has now passed away?” I pray that we will each choose better – Jesus! - when faced with any tendency to add to the sacrifice of Christ.
