Faithful & Fearless: Lesson 1/Day 3
Friday Feb 08, 2019
Friday Feb 08, 2019
There’s something so reassuring and connecting about that “you too?” experience. Whether it’s as simple as finding out that someone else also loves sushi like you do or as significant as hearing someone say they’ve had the same serious doubts and fears as you have. Connecting to one another through our shared experiences brings us closer in community. I believe that’s by design. One of the first words recorded in the Bible affirms this when God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Boom. Community. Identity. Purpose. God saw all that he created was good and saw also that one thing wasn’t good enough...being alone. This is why the Word of God isn’t a theology text. It’s stories of how God connected with us, how we connected back – or missed the connection, and about men and women connected with one another. It’s the accounts of men and women of faith and faithlessness, of fearless obedience and failures to trust. All these accounts point us to God’s love and plan and desires for us. The account of Ruth’s life will bring us through these kinds of connections and “you too?” moments together. As we move into this study let’s set our intention together to see God more clearly and to connect in faithful fearlessness to one another as well.

Faithful and Fearless: Lesson 1/Day 2
Thursday Feb 07, 2019
Thursday Feb 07, 2019
Ruth was originally recorded and then read to Jews living in the ancient Middle East. That’s a vastly different culture and time!
The Bible wasn’t written to you, was most definitely written for you!
You are the blessed recipient of the holy, inerrant, inspired words of the Creator of the Universe. As you begin your reading in Ruth, I pray that you will be filled with gratitude and love for what you have in your hands, that you will realize that God has not only revealed Himself through the Word of prophets but through the life of His Son. May your reading always draw you closer to Him.

Reading the Bible for some makes them feel inadequate. It brings back memories of being in school and having to do a book report. For some, reading the Bible feels like a chore that they never feel good enough at doing. For others, the Bible can feel overwhelming – it seems like old words from a time and culture long ago and hard to relate to. Then again, perhaps you absolutely adore reading and so spending time in God’s Word gives you the best of the worlds you love – reading and spiritual growth.
Wherever you are in your walk, as you approach this study please remember that we should not just “study” the Word, we should delight in it. Don’t think of this as a requirement for your faithfulness any more than you would think of savoring a delicious meal as a requirement. You enjoy a meal because it was beautifully prepared with amazing ingredients by a skilled chef who poured their love and attention into its preparation. Savor God’s Word like that. Enjoy each morsel. Breathe in the aroma of each word. Sense the love of the Creator in each page. Delight in the Word like you would delight in the best, most delicious, and nourishing meal you’ve ever eaten.

Do husbands have a command to lead their wives? What are wives called to do? How do we live in a world so overcome by evil?

When our son Jonathan was in Little League baseball there was a short minute when he considered going out for the catcher position. You know what changed his mind? The gear. All. That. Gear. To be protected from pitches, batters, and runners you need good gear! He realized he didn’t want to be the target and he didn’t want to suit up like that. Christians can make that choice in their walk as well. But there’s an important difference. No matter if you gear up or not, you’re still the target. You’re still gonna take hits, pitches, and runners. Suiting up spiritually is a choice, and it’s wise to be ready. Yes, there’s victory in Jesus. Yes, the outcome of the game is determined. But faithful, spirit-filled Christians who are strong in the Lord are well-armed because they know that while the battle is the Lord’s the days are evil and we can stand ready and wrestle victoriously with the full armor of God covering us.

Ephesians Lesson 5/Day 7

Once upon a time, a little girl believed in fairies, elves, fairy godmothers, and Santa Claus. She was enchanted by the tales she read and dreamed of mysterious, hidden, worlds. That little girl grew up to understand that while mischievous fairies and magical godmothers would not be fluttering around the daffodils or dramatically appearing in a swirl of light when she wished on a star, a more real unseen world did exist. She learned that she was blessed as a child of God with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places, and she learned that she was empowered to battle spiritual warfare armored and defended by God Almighty. With the truth of God’s word and the power of the Spirit in her, she lived in the strength of God’s might and stood strong against the devil’s schemes and lived blessed, victorious, and joyful ever after. Amen.

Ephesians Lesson 5/Day 6
Thursday Nov 29, 2018
Thursday Nov 29, 2018
What do I have, what do I enjoy, what could I experience that truly is mine? My son? God gave him to me. My marriage? God brought our lives together. My talents and skills? God gave me the mind, the memory, the means to bring them all to life. My very breath is the breath of God. The truth of this doesn’t make me sad at all. On the contrary, “whom have I in heaven but you and on earth I have no one besides you?” When I live in that truth I live with arms and hands and heart open. Rather than clutching my will in my marriage I happily submit to my husband. Rather than grasping for ways to get my child to see things my way, I peacefully release him to the Father. Rather than manipulating my way into a higher position in my career or pressuring those who may work for me, I live with joy and eagerness to help others succeed. My dad wrote a simple, yet powerful song that is a great reminder in light of today’s passage. “The cattle on a thousand hills belong unto the Lord; the sun, the moon, the stars are His; it’s written in His word; All I have was given to me; Not a thing I own; how angry I get when I forget; that it’s all on loan. No rights, no rights have I; I gave them to the Lord, enthroned on high. No rights, no rights have I; I’m a slave of the Lord – now free am I!”* Paul first introduced and validated himself as an apostle set apart by the will of God. Then later in the letter, he reminds us all that he’s a slave – a bondservant – of Christ. That’s the right mindset. That’s the truth. My rights, my will, my desires are subject to Christ. I’m His. He’s mine. That’s all I need.
*I’ll sing the full song for you in today’s recorded study.

Ephesians Lesson 5/Days 4 & 5
Monday Nov 26, 2018
Monday Nov 26, 2018
What’s the oldest lie? I think it can be summed up in any one of these: “I know best”...or...“My way is better than God’s”...or...”I am enough”...or “I can do it my way.” God’s word teaches that the original sin was man’s attempt to place himself and herself ahead of God’s plan. From that point forward mankind has been battling to stay on top in every aspect of every relationship – between us and God and between ourselves and one another. God continually reminds us that true love, peace, joy, and ultimate satisfaction will only be found when we humble ourselves and submit to Him and submit ourselves to one another. It’s not “my way or the highway” it’s “God’s way is the right way.” And yet, if there’s one word that can continually keep us bristled it’s that word: submit. Thinking about submission – whether to God or to one another – opens our mind to thoughts of missing out, losing out, and being left out. But God assures us over and again that this way of true mutual and godly submission is the way in, being drawn near, included, and blessed. The constant lie of the devil is to make us doubt God’s word and twist God’s intent in this. Satan’s especially favorite target is marriage – the one bond that most closely points to God’s covenant with us – because if he can warp that bond with selfishness, he can effectively warp our view of God as well. Pray today for a pure heart to read and grasp God’s view of submission, to be discerning in spotting errors in your understanding or resistance to God’s plan in your thinking.
